However, not all new insurance companies have taken the route of buying market share. One such is Allianz , the long-established German insurer that covers everything from your pet cat to your car and home.

Eleven years ago, it launched Allianz Worldwide Care (AWC) from offices in Dublin. It took the slow and steady route, pricing policies realistically, according to Ron Buchan, the chief executive. And eschewing paying gross incentives to brokers.

Broker commissions are 10 per cent on initial business and renewal – similar to the two big operators, Bupa International and Axa PPP .

Three years from launch, AWC was profitable “after spending millions of Allianz’s money”, as Mr Buchan puts it.

“Allianz doesn’t entertain losses. So we didn’t go and buy a shed-load of losses and then correct it. It’s not the German way. The key, we learnt very early on, is client retention and we therefore probably over-invested in the key client-focusing areas that people would latch on to – claims and all that, invoicing and claims adjustment.
