In the US renting a car is common and people often use this convenience to travel from one place to another as well as within a city or town they are visiting. Whether you need a car within the US or abroad there are a few basics you need to keep in mind.
• First determine what you need. Write down details like what kind of car, for how many days, who will driver, how many will travel, do you need a baby seat, and so on.
• Second do a thorough online search for an ideal car rental agency that is reputable, rents out cars where you are going, and offers competitive rates.
When renting a car keep handy:
• A valid driver’s license.
• If you are driving abroad then your passport with valid visas.
• Proof of age.
• Any discount coupons.
• A booking voucher, if you have booked online.
• Car rental insurance if any.
• Copies of your health insurance.
• Proof of residence.
• Social security card.
• Credit card.
• If more than one person will drive the rental car then documents for the second driver too.
Most car rental companies only accept payment by credit card. Always read through the contract carefully and make sure you understand the fine print. If you have any questions contact customer service and find answers to your questions.
Before renting a car ask for an estimate. Determine clearly what the charges cover and if the company will bill for anything over and above the estimate. You must inspect the vehicle before taking possession and when you return the vehicle. Otherwise you may pay for scratches or bends you were not responsible for.
Tips:
• Find out who is responsible for fuel.
• Ensure that the rental company offers 24-hour roadside assistance.
• Ask if the contract includes pick up and drop off or whether you will be charged extra.
• Check whether your car insurance covers a rental car. Otherwise take additional car insurance, its best to avail one from independent insurance companies as they are more likely to offer a better deal than insurance sold by the car rental company.

(CNN) -- Kezia Fitzgerald and her 15-month-old daughter are both blondes with bright blue eyes. They both giggle easily and share a love of peaches.
The mom and daughter have more in common than Fitzgerald would like. Five months after Fitzgerald received a cancer diagnosis, so did her little girl, Saoirse.
Their cancers, albeit different types, had spread throughout their bodies.
"It's frustrating. It's unfair," said Fitzgerald, 28, who lives in Danvers, Massachusetts. "At the same time, there's nothing you can do to change it. The only thing you can do is heal and treat yourself."
This isn't the first time cancer has struck two members of a family at the same time. Fathers and sons have dealt with dual prostate cancer diagnoses, and mothers and daughters have fought breast cancer side-by-side.
But rarely do a young mom and her 1-year-old share the experience of losing their hair and getting chemotherapy together.
