Paul Collingwood came through a tentative practice session on Friday morning as he seeks to prove his fitness for the third Test in Cape Town.
Collingwood, who dislocated his left index finger during the second Test against South Africa at Kingsmead, had strapping on the injury as England netted at Newlands.
He batted for 10 minutes against throw-downs before taking part in a very gentle slip-fielding drill. Later he took part in a formal net session - albeit with paceman James Anderson bowling off-spin - and appeared pleased with how the injury reacted.
England have called up Michael Carberry as cover for the middle-order batsman.
Should Collingwood be unfit, either Carberry or all-rounder Luke Wright would be his most likely replacements.
Town won't charge for fire services
The Town of Collingwood won't be charging for emergency services anytime soon.
Council passed a motion on Monday, stating they will not charge residents if the fire department is called to their home for an emergency.
Council did so to send a message to private firms who are petitioning municipalities, suggesting they could obtain additional revenue if they charged homeowners - or their insurance companies - a fee if the fire department responds. Elyea said one company that contacted the municipality would take 30 per cent plus taxes.
Collingwood Fire Chief Trent Elyea believes charging residents an additional fee for emergency services would not only lead to higher insurance costs, but also deter some residents from calling the fire department in fear of a large bill.
"We shouldn't be charging extra for our services," Elyea told council.
Elyea recognizes the town charges residents for other services such as use of recreational facilities but he believes the fire department is a different type of service.
