Car Insurance No Claims For Named Drivers

Can You Get Seperate Car Insurance In The Uk? |

One option is to pick up a really cheap car at auction (usually the cheapest), it will have to have a little mot left on it so that it is at least insurable, then insure it for a really low mileage for 1 year. I’m not sure whether zero miles will entitle you to a no claims bonus – you’d need to check with each insurer you get a quote from. Then after your year away sell it through the car auction again or scrap it, if it only cost £200 you can only lose that amount. The big minus is your mother is going to have a crusty old car outside the house for a year. The other minus is, you probably want it off the public road and in a driveway if you have one. With no mot after a few months, it’s insurance may become questionable and if someone drives into while it is parked you may have a lot of hassle. The other party may argue your car shouldn’t have been on the road as it is not roadworthy etc. After 1 year though you will have an extra years no claims. Ta da. You can actually have two insurance policies for one vehicle but if you have to make a claim it gets complicated as both insurance companies will pay out half each, this means the claims process will be a real hassle as you will need to communicate with two insurance companies who will also have to communicate with each other (making a claim through one insurance company is usually hard enough). So in the end you and your mum would be paying for insurance twice but will still end up with the same cover. The best thing you could do is get your mum to add you as a named driver. Although you won’t earn a no claims bonus you will still be insured as a named driver and when it comes to getting your first insurance policy in your name most insurers will take this into account. The price of insurance will also drop slightly after you have had your licence for a year so it should be cheaper by the time you get back from working on the cruise ship.

Can I put my partner on my own car insurance policy?

Emma Banks, an insurance expert from LV , answers the question:-

MS Henderson asks:-

My fiancee has just bought his own insurance for my car, as my company were reluctant to insure him as an extra driver because he has a provisional licence as well as a 6 month ban over 3 years ago. He was honest at time of buying his insurance, that I was the owner and keeper of the car, and it all went through fine, but now a friend of mine insists this is illegal. My insurance is comprehensive, and covers only me, his is 3pf+t and covers only him, is this legal?

Emma Banks answers:-

Strictly speaking this isn’t illegal but it is not recommended. Many insurers will have a clause in their policy that says you can’t have ‘dual’ insurance on any vehicle as this will leave them open to fraud. So in the event of you having an accident and needing to make a claim you could find that neither insurer will pay the claim. Your best bet is to find an insurer who will take on both of you on one policy even if it means swapping mid-term as then you can be sure if the event of an accident your claim will be paid. Generally anyone who is on a provisional (or full) licence with a ban within five years is going to have to pay a higher premium as its only after five years that bans are not counted as relevant driving history.
