Young drivers who have used their cars safely are being rewarded with an average of more than £100 cash back this month as part of an innovative scheme.
Almost 90 per cent of motorists who are insured on the Co-operative's Young Driver scheme will receive a lump sum in their bank account as a reward for keeping to speed limits, avoiding excessive braking and acceleration and taking corners carefully.
The insurance product uses Smartbox telematics to monitor how a car is driven and scores performance every 90 days.
If customers score well on the four categories - speeding, cornering, braking and acceleration, time of day of driving - they get a partial refund on their premium.
David Neave, director of general insurance at the Co-operative, said: "Insurance has been rising at a disproportionate rate for young drivers, but telematics offers a genuine solution to stop this trend and prevent a generation of young people being driven off the roads.
